Pakistan played their 1,000th ODI against Australia at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Saturday, the first of three home ODIs.

Before this match, the Green Shirts who played their first ODI against New Zealand in Christchurch in 1973, had played 999 ODI matches, winning 527 and losing 442. Nine matches were tied, and 21 concluded with no result.

With 1,075 ODI appearances, India tops the list, closely followed by Australia with 1,019 appearances.

Australia captain Josh Inglis gave Pakistani opponent Shaheen Shah Afridi a memorable gift before the toss for the historic match: a bat with a bail and three balls fastened on top, representing Pakistan’s 1,000th ODI match.

Afridi described it as “a big achievement” to represent Pakistan in the landmark fixture and expressed the team’s determination to celebrate the occasion with a victory after winning the toss and electing to field first against Australia.
