Chinese scientists have made progress in developing a new technology capable of converting air pollution-causing gasses into aviation fuel.

According to Chinese media sources, researchers at the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, have made advancements in the conversion of carbon dioxide into aircraft fuel.

In this study, carbon dioxide is transformed directly into hydrocarbons, which are a key constituent of aviation fuel. During the process, the gas is mixed with water and converted into liquid fuel.

According to the Chinese experts, this transformation took years to overcome a number of technical challenges. The findings from this research have been published in the ACS Catalysis Journal.

This discovery emerges at a time when worldwide aircraft fuel prices are rising dramatically, particularly after fuel supplies were disrupted during the US-Iran conflict.

The experts are now planning to expand this technique beyond the laboratory to large-scale utilization.

If successfully commercialized, this technique could help reduce reliance on fossil fuels while also allowing for the recycling of carbon dioxide.
